Heat, Humidity, and Wood Movement
Summers here regularly hit the low-to-mid 90s, with heat index values pushing well above 100°F thanks to Gulf humidity that hovers between 70 and 80 percent year-round. This isn't just uncomfortable—it affects how your deck materials behave.
Pressure-treated lumber and composite decking boards both absorb and release moisture with seasonal swings. In the Texas heat, this moisture movement is constant and significant. You'll see expansion and contraction happening even within a single summer month. Fasteners that aren't stainless steel or galvanized corrode faster in this climate. We use galvanized lag bolts spaced according to AWC DCA6 span tables—minimum 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch lag bolt spacing depending on joist span—combined with LUS joist hangers (Simpson Strong-Tie galvanized connectors) to secure joists without toe-nailing. This two-point fastening system (bolts and hangers) distributes load properly and resists the pulling and racking forces that wind and weather create.
Before we even install bolts, we flash the ledger board with metal flashing that routes water away from the rim board and down the exterior wall.
